Obesity is a disease in which highly complex pathways are involved and consequently the immune system is weakened. In addition, surgeries such as gastric sleeve and gastric bypass surgery are major surgeries. The general expectation is that patients who have had major surgery become more susceptible to other diseases. In current studies, it is observed that the truth is not like this. Let’s take a look at the studies:
If individuals with obesity have coronavirus disease, it is observed that the disease progresses more seriously and the possibility of hospitalization and intensive care stay is quite high.

In a recent study, it was found that patients who had previously undergone bariatric surgery are more advantageous than obese patients in terms of both hospitalization and intensive care needs .

In another study, adverse situations that may occur in the first 30 days after bariatric and metabolic surgery if applied with appropriate Covid-19 protocols are not different from pre-pandemic rates..

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), obesity disease increases the risk of hospitalization three times in patients with coronavirus disease (2). Today, the measures that minimize the risk of getting the virus are social distance, correct use of masks and attention to hand hygiene.

As a result of these findings, there is no finding that obesity patients should postpone obesity and metabolic surgery operations such as gastric sleeve or gastric bypass surgeries. Moreover, it seems reasonable for patients to prefer powerful and long-term treatment methods such as gastric sleeve and gastric bypass without further exposure to diseases that weaken the immune system such as obesity and type 2 diabetes.
